Food photography, or indeed any type of still-life photography, is a great way to teach yourself to observe subjects more carefully and to analyse their shape, form and texture. Digital photography makes it so easy to discard the shots that don't work and just keep snapping; however, setting up a shot and using a tripod immediately slows you down and forces you to think hard about your composition.
I really like the more naturalistic type of food photography that is used nowadays, as compared with the days when mashed potato was used as an ice-cream substitute and food was coated in all manner of strange substances to make it look (but not taste!) appetising.
